28th Power of Paint Party…

Welcome Paint Lovers!!!

Last week I tackled the dreaded white walls of the staircase.  If you follow me on Twitter you heard all my grumblings.  I’m not sure which is worse… stairs or kitchen painting… so may little areas to “cut in.”

Of course it’s worth all the pain and suffering!

Here it is before in all it’s white, builder chalky paint…

IMG_3658

And now… (sorry for the grainy pictures to follow… there’s really no natural light on our staircase… I’m sure there’s some way in photoshop I can fix this… adding to my “need to learn pile”)

Awe… I love Tobacco Road!   This is the same color we have in the entry area…

I’m “thinking” of doing a mirror wall on this side of the staircase.

OK… so there is one area I haven’t painted!!!  Anyone have any great tips on how to paint this??  I can’t reach it with my normal 6 foot ladder.  My hubby suggested putting 2×4’s across the stair-railing that run perpendicular to this wall & I stand on it… not LOVIN’ that idea!  So, help me painters!!!  If I had the $$ I’d hire someone to paint just that section.

I’m planning to do the hallways upstairs in the same color as well.  I think I’m officially 2/3’s done with painting the house… I’m sure once I’m all done painting I’ll want to change a color though… right?

So what have you been painting?

Let’s Party Painters!

Okay so I am really short…and I had vaulted ceilings in my previous house. I used a wooden paint extension pole that you could fasten to any paint roller or edger. It worked great. Or you could get a mini trampoline and jump as you paint…just an idea lol!

  2. Karen Sabrsula says:

I would suggest an extension ladder with a leg leveler. I know, it may mean buying a new ladder…. but they are also great to clean gutters. LOL !

havent had something to link in a while, so i'm glad 2 participate this week!

Ahh I love TR too. Have it in our kitchen and breakfast area. It's the best! I don't know what to tell you though about the staircase wall. We had to have painters do ours and they were on those giant extension ladders. Too scary for me!

  5. I'm not a fan of trying to paint tall walls, a little to scary for me. Thanks for hosting again. Have a great week.

    Maryann-

Are you decent at cutting corners with a brush? Are you able to get any carpet-crawlers out from underfoot and give it your full attention for 15 min?

If so- (this is one High-Tech solution, oh man, you ready?)…. Duct tape your favorite cutting brush to a pole (broom handle, roller handle….) and go smooth and slow. Start with the hardest part so you can attack it before your arms get tired and wobbly, then work your way to the easier bits.

If you're not great with brushes, the same technique applies to those little cutting foam pieces… not my favorite because they're not as exact, but that high- no one will notice.

Great color BTW. A mirror wall would be gorgeous! Thrift store treasure hunting FTW!

  7. Michelle says:

A piece of PVC pipe with the handle of the paint brush stuck inside. Duct tape it in place. Paint!

I have avoided painting that same wall in my house, for the same reason! Here is what I will do when I decide to paint it… get a tall ladder that has adjustable legs so you can stager them on the steps. That way you can still be on the ladder, and reach the high point on the wall at the same time. The 2×4 method sounds scary.

i think like the first commenter, a paint brush extender would work. it won't be as good as if you were able to hold the brush, but i think it will work. how much would it cost to have a professional just finish it off for you? ;)

I love that color! No suggestion as to how to paint that space. Be careful!

    Maryann,
I have the same issue, and hired a painter because of it. I thought they'd bring in scaffolding, but instead the had a looong stick that they duct taped a trim brush to, and carefully cut in at the top.

  13. Sandra {sawdust and paper scraps} says:

MaryAnn, I can't tell from your pictures but is the wall space that you can't reach only in the stair area? If so, you can build a one legged platform to place on the stairs to create a level ground to put your ladder on. The platform sits on one step and sticks over the other steps with the leg sitting on the lower step. Measure how wide your ladder base is to know how wide to make your platform. Place your platform piece on the step using a level to keep if flat and then measure down to the lower step to determine how tall the leg needs to be. Nail or screw the leg on to the platform piece (double piece of plywood would probably be strong enough). And, make the "leg" sit flush against the front of the step it's in front of rather than teetering on the outside edge of the step it's on. If you have scrap wood lying around it won't cost you anything. Then, you can take it apart when you are done painting and use the wood for something else. Did that make any sense at all? Good luck!

  14. I need to paint my stair case wall area too, but I am putting it off for the same reason – how to reach that high area. I'll be interested to hear if you find a good solution! The color you chose looks really good

Thank you guys for your A-MAZING ideas… you guys are great!!! I think I'm going to attempt to duct tape a brush to an extension somehow… I've master the brush cutting in… so I think I'll
TRY this method. I promise I won't be scooting my was across 2×4's anytime soon… I am not a fan of heights! Thanks again for all the great ideas!

  16. m @ random musings says:

uhh…Am I reading right? The hubs suggested standing on 2×4's only supported on one side, like a shelf?? Please tell me he also suggested nailing a cleat directly parallel to the landing (on the wall you just painted) to fasten those 2x4s?

You could also try building a scaffolding: put an A-frame ladder at the bottom of the stairs, then run some 2x4s across connecting a rung of the ladder to the stair. I made a little ascii drawing to illustrate, but blogger doesn't keep indents. The 2x4s will be supported on both ends, one by the ladder, and one by the stairs.

    Maryann,

    Thanks again for hosting POPP!

We were able to lean a ladder over the railing across from the wall that needed painting, but we didn't have the stairs double wide like yours. I also used the edger screwed onto an extension pole.

In Photoshop, play with the Filters: Blur > Gaussian Blur (.5 pixels should work) or under Sharpen > Unsharp mask

I'd be happy to help you with any other photoshop Q's.

If the tape your angle brush to a pole fails…home depot has LARGE ladders for rent. I paint homes for people and have rented them several times. It is not that much money and totally worth the investment. Even better you can recruit a couple friends who all want that area painted and you can split the rental cost.

  19. Robin's Nesting Place says:

I have a long extention rod that I use for high ceilings. I put a small paint pad with rollers on it. I brush the paint on the pad to keep the rollers from getting messy. It works great and gets right up to the ceiling.
