My Favorite Easter Dish

Well friends… we are just days away from Easter and I’m sharing my favorite dish.  It’s not ham or leg of lamb… although I love them both.  It’s not a cheesy potato casserole… although that sounds delicious right now… it’s something my Mom has been making for years… Charoset.

I’ve had the privilege to partake in a Seder dinner a few time over the years, in fact my parents have put them on a few times.  Charoset is one of the food items in a traditional Seder dinner.  This time of year, Jewish families at the start of Passover have a Seder dinner to remind them of how God brought them out of Egypt. (You can read about it in book of Exodus in the Bible) The Charoset reminds them of the mortar used by the Jewish slaves to build the storehouses of Egypt.  It may not be the prettiest looking food… but it’s so delicious.

It’s kinda like a fruit, nut and spice salsa.  I’ve seen it made where it’s chunkier or more pureed, like I’ve made it here.  You use the Matzo crackers and scoop the Charoset onto a broken off piece of the cracker.

Charoset: My Favorite Easter Dish

Serves 10-12
Prep time 5 minutes
Meal type Appetizer, Dessert, Side Dish
Misc Pre-preparable, Serve Cold
Occasion Easter
This is a great dish anytime, but I love to have it at Easter. It's like a fruit salsa... apples, almonds, dates and cinnamon. It's delicious!

Ingredients

  • 3 apples ((I used a combo, 2 granny smiths and 1 fugi))
  • 3/4 cups raw almonds ((make sure they are not salted))
  • 1 cup golden raisins
  • 1/2 cup apple cider ((you can use apple juice or white grape juice too))
  • 1/3 cup dates
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

Directions

Step 1
Chop the apples into chunks. I leave the skin on, but you can peel if you prefer.
Step 2
Add all of the ingredients to a blender or food processor. Pulse until your desired consistency. Add more juice if needed.

If you’ve never tried it, I highly recommend it.  I would make a great appetizer too.  You can change it up… add different dried fruit, add ginger, different juice… lots of options!

Maryann, this looks really good. Thanks for giving your readers some insight into some of the Jewish traditions and history of the Seder. I’ve learned some things over the years from my Jewish friends and some family, but am not very familiar with the traditional Seder dishes.
