For the LOVE of… Tufting

Hi Friends…

I’ve loved tufted pieces for a while now… they just shout glam to me.  I’m trying to talk my daughter into wanting a tufted headboard (she wants a bedroom makeover for her birthday).

i’m so lazy about buying stuff sometimes.  specifically a headboard, i have the little rolling frame that came with my mattress so my bed is always rolling away from the wall and my pillows fall down behind it.  this is a gorgeous headboard, i’d love to have one similar to it.

124th Power of Paint Party… Faux Mirrors

Welcome Paint Lovers to the weekly Power of Paint Party @ Domestically Speaking… the party all about paint and the place to show-off those amazing paint projects you’ve completed!

This week I’ve got a flash-back to one of the coolest spray paints I’ve used.

faux mirror 4 text

I had these 2 pieces of glass that originally were overlays for our tables in the family room.

This is what I used as my inspiration:

Eagan Multipanel Mirror, Large, Bronze finish

Pottery Barn ~ LOVE them… I do a happy dance when the new catalog arrives!

This was the first time I’ve used Krylon’s Looking Glass Mirror-Like Paint.  You spray the  paint on the reverse side of the glass to create a reflective surface.

With a back and forth sweeping motion I did 5 light coats letting the paint dry for 1 minute in between coats.  The photo above is after 2 coats.

Next was getting rid of the brassy gold trim.  I used DecoArt’s Dazzling Metallics in Shimmering Silver and DecoArt’s Americana in Black. I layered the paint to create this look.

I smile when I see the recycled glass tabletops now!

faux mirror 1

It does not create a true mirror finish, more of an antique, aged mirror finish… but definitely reflective!

faux mirror 2

These mirrors have floated all over the house.  Currently they are leaning on our built-in desk transformation.

faux mirror 3

This truly is one of the coolest spray paint transformations.

Don’t forget you can submit your paint projects to my other blog, Power of Paint, to be featured there.

So what have you been painting?

Trash Can Pendant Light

Happy Monday Friends!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Today is the last day to order your Mother Defined or Grandmother Defined burlap sign at the discounted rate of $15.  If you’d like to order one you can email me at domesticallyspeaking (at) yahoo (dot) com .

This is a project that I have been sitting on for about a year. I purchased this oh-so-cute trashcan at Home Goods and finally got around to working on the transformation I had planned last week.

Here’s what I came up with…

trash can pendant ad

Here’s what I started with…

trash can pendant 9

Here’s what I used:

$12.99 trash can from Home Goods

West Elm hanging light kit

wire cutter

pen

I used a pen to trace the size I needed to cut out of the basket.  Trimming the can was easy except for the wire frame that went down the center of the basket.  It took some extra work to get through that wire.

Once the wire was cut I inserted the light fixture through the basket and then twisted the top lip (the scallop-looking piece in the photo below) in place.  (With the fixture I had this was the best way I figured to keep it all in place)… oh I scored this West Elm light kit from the Pottery Barn Outlet for only 47 cents… yes!

Then I used the hooks (that came with the kit) to hang it all up.

Oh how I LOVE it!

I think I’m going to make a cute burlap cover for the cord.

And a little looksee with the light on…

Nothing like turning trash into a treasure.

Thanks for stopping by friends… have a fabulous week!

Teacher Appreciation Favorite

Hi Friends!

Little Miss Monogram, one of my sponsors, has a great Mother’s Day deal going on with their PSA Essentials personalized stamps!  Now through May 1st, if a customer orders a personalized stamp (on-sale for $30, regularly $40) – they can get a FREE Rosetta Peel & Stick stamp set ($15 value.)    That’s $55 of PSA for $30.  That’s a great deal.  I recently received a PSA Essentials stamp and I’ve been thrilled with it.

Today I’ve got an oldie, but goodie to share with you guys.  With teacher appreciation week just over a week and a half away for us here in the US (where has this school year gone!)… and in case you missed this post… here is one of my all-time favorite Teacher Appreciation gift ideas.

I used mason jars, the same as I used for my Pottery Barn Candleholders.

Filled them with M&M’s… plain & peanut

Printed out this cute M&M poem…

Glued it to some cardstock to frame it out…

Hole punched around the edges & then weaved the twine through the holes & attached the poem with some twine to the jar.

I traced the lid on top of some leftover vellum paper to make a cute top to fit in the lid.

Easy-peasy ~ CUTE and Yummy gift!

Of course you can customize this with any type of clear container… your teacher’s favorite colored paper… some cute ribbon instead of twine.

Here’s the poem (in case you want to copy, paste & use)

Green is for the inspiration you give me each day.

Blue is for your patience in showing me the way.

Orange is for your warmth and caring style.

Yellow is for the way you always make me smile.

Red is for my life that you have touched this year.

You’re a very special teacher just like this jar, that’s clear.

You place knowledge in our children’s hands

and melt into their hearts and lives forever.

You’re a “Magnificent” & “Marvelous” teacher

Thank you for being my M&M.

123rd Power of Paint Party… Avocado Desk

Welcome Paint Lovers to this week’s Power of Paint Party… a party to showcase all latest, a-mazing paint projects!

This week I decided to update a garage sale piece I scored a few years ago for $3!  Don’t you love a great deal.

avocado desk 2

This is what the desk looked like when I originally painted it black a few years back…

I used Valspar’s Avocado Green Satin spray paint.  The key to successful spray painting is multiple light coats.  Most spray paints allow you to recoat within minutes… so it really doesn’t take time to do the multiple coats.

I moved it from our entryway to our master bedroom.  Now to accessorize and find a cute little chair.
