Kitchen Nook

Happy Friday Folks!  I’m so happy that we’re at the edge of the weekend.  It’s been one of those weeks… anyone else have one of those too?   I’m just thankful we have a weekend with no sporting events, birthday parties, etc.

I realized I never showed you guys my new-to-me (once again) kitchen table and chairs all together.  So I wanted to share them with you guys today…

If you missed the how-to’s here are the links…

Next goal… finishing window treatments.  I had some dark espresso brown panels hanging there, but I’ve got some leftover drop cloth from covering the chairs that I want to use.  Not sure what I’m going to do with them yet though. Smile

Thanks for stopping by & have a fabulous weekend!

For the Love of: Mason Jars

Every few weeks or when my overwhelming love for something needs to be shared… I have what I like to call, For the Love Of.  This week I’m crushing on Mason Jars!  I’ve always loved them, but this week they’ve been glaring at me.  I think it’s because we’ve been having beautiful Spring like weather for the last few weeks here in So. Cal. and my brain is already turning towards Spring/Summer décor.

Let’s check out some of the beauties I found… mostly with the help of my BFF, Pinterest.

These are the mason jar candle holders I made a few years back.  You can click the photo to get to the tutorial.

Dark & Dreamy!

It is finished!  At least the tabletop.  You can read about part 1 here if you missed it.  This tabletop use to be a creamy white, but after seeing countless tables with a creamy white base and a dark and dreamy tabletop… I finally did something about it!!

Here’s what I used:

General Finishes Gel Stain in Java

Minwax Paste Finishing Wax

Klean-Strip Paint Thinner

Foam brushes

old sock or cloth

sandpaper

Oh how I LOVE my new tabletop!!!  You read all the how-to over at the DIY Club.

#2 on my Top Blogging Posts

You can see Top Blog Posts #5  here, #4 is here and #3 here.

And now #2…

{Board & Batten Bathroom}

I’ve had this on my WANT “to-do” list since I first saw it done at It’s The Little Things That Make A House A Home.  There is fantastic info on how they did it, plus links to other sites for more info.

Just to flashback… here’s what the bathroom looked like last Friday… just a boring, builder bathroom.

I gave you guys some hints on this project last week.  Last  Friday I painted the upper portion Warm Caramel by Glidden, with my free quart of paint from their giveaway last year.

Over the weekend I picked up my Dad’s nailer and saw to make this project much quicker (2 items that I would love to own).

I started by putting 1×8 pieces of MDF across the top.  I cut it into sections to go around this protrusion.

Then I nailed the 1.5” slats in vertically every 12 inches.

The Lettered Cottage helped me plan the ledge shelf.  I put a 1×4 on top of my 1×8.  It was LOTS of fun trimming out the center to fit around my wall extension… I’m glad my hubby helped on that.  It would have helped to have a jigsaw.

Don’t you love my mold skills… got to love play-doh!

One of those nifty “L” shaped pieces of molding finished off the ledge shelf.

A good caulking at all seams and putty in the nail holes.  I have to tell you I love DAP products… great caulking and their putty that is pink till it dries is brilliant.

A coat of glossy white made everything look just lovely.

I still need to finish the other side of the bathroom… see…

I love how a few pieces of wood and paint can completely change a space.  This was a pretty easy project too.  It was my first time using a power saw and nailer.  So, if you’ve been thinking about doing a project like this… do it!  You can!

A little laundry love…

Last night at the Power of Paint Party I showed you guys how I took 2 basic shelves that had been sitting in the garage to create 1 long shelf above my washer and dryer.

Today you get the “how to” of my cute little shelf skirt and to see it all prettied up for you!

{How to Skirt A Shelf}

I’m sure there is some fancy, sewing method to make a cute shelf skirt, but this skirt requires only fabric, Heat n Bond, an iron and a regular stapler… perfect for the sewing novice I am!

#1… Determine the length of your skirt.  I cut the fabric for my skirt at 12”.  The fabric I had on hand was 54” long,  but that wasn’t long enough for my shelf… so I cut two 12” strips.

#2… Iron your fabric.  You want it to look smooth and pretty.

#3… Use Heat n Bond (or something similar) to hem just one of your long sides.  (This will be the bottom of the skirt)

I also used the Heat n Bond to attach the two pieces of fabric together to make one long piece.

#4… Time to start stapling.  I laid the fabric on top of the shelf with the backside of the fabric facing up and the unfinished long edge closest to you.  I started on the far right side and folded the edge of the fabric in a bit and stapled the fabric onto the edge of the shelf.  This creates the edge hem.

(Hopefully this photo describes this step better than my words)

#5… Do the same on the other side, folding in the outer edge.

#6… Now that both ends of the fabric are stapled to the edge of the shelf, find the center of your fabric and staple it to the center of the shelf.

#7… I started working on the “right half” of the fabric.  I found the center of the right side and stapled it to the center of the right side of the shelf.  Then I repeated the process to each of those 2 sections.

#8… Continue finding the center of the loose fabric and the center space on the shelf and staple.

#9… Do this until your loose fabric is about a few inches when pulled away with your fingers.

This is when I pulled the fabric “poof” straight out and then folded it to lay flat to the left… making a little pleat.

#10Staple, staple, staple and staple some more!

When you flip over your skirt admire the cuteness you just created (without a sewing machine)!

Then comes the fun and decorating… shopping the house.

Now this is what greets me when I come in from the garage.

Someday I’d love to have some cute clear canisters for my laundry detergent.

I’m still debating which of my burlap signs to keep here… the clothespin, safety pin or my laundry defined burlap sign?

What’s your vote?

You can purchase my burlap signs over in my sidebar.

58th Power of Paint Party… Nightstands

Welcome Paint Lovers…

Last week I gave you another glimpse at my master bedroom makeover.

I received 2 nightstands from my brother-in-law… free, decent shape, but laminate.

There were a few chips and scrapes.  I used wood filler to patch up the imperfections.

Once the wood filler was dried I sanded over those areas till smooth.  I didn’t sand the rest of the piece.

Zinsser’s Bulls Eye Water Based Primer…

This primer is great for covering laminate!  It sticks like no other primer I’ve tried.  No sanding needed!

I put on 2 coats on primer and then 2 coats of Valspar’s white paint.

I used a foam brush & roller.

Bye-bye laminate!

So what have you been painting?

Power of Paint Party Rules:

This is a PAINT party… so pretty please, link-up only paint related projects.

I HATE deleting!

Please put my NEW nifty POPP button (you can find it up in my menu bar’s BUTTONS) in your blog post or a link back to this party somewhere on your blog… that way others from your blog can check out all the paint projects too.
