Kitchen Nook

Happy Friday Folks!  I’m so happy that we’re at the edge of the weekend.  It’s been one of those weeks… anyone else have one of those too?   I’m just thankful we have a weekend with no sporting events, birthday parties, etc.

I realized I never showed you guys my new-to-me (once again) kitchen table and chairs all together.  So I wanted to share them with you guys today…

If you missed the how-to’s here are the links…

chalk painted chairs (with recipe)

removing white paint top

dark dreamy stain

Next goal… finishing window treatments.  I had some dark espresso brown panels hanging there, but I’ve got some leftover drop cloth from covering the chairs that I want to use.  Not sure what I’m going to do with them yet though. Smile

Thanks for stopping by & have a fabulous weekend!

Valentine’s Day Mantel

Happy Monday!

This last weekend the older 2 kiddos were busy finishing up their science fair projects, so the littlest princess and I put the final tweaks on our Valentine’s mantel.

I kept it on the simple side this year.

With my lovey lanterns

Doilies used to stencil on the mirrors…

my burlap hearts

Some Epsom salt snow…

Heart doilies strung on twine by my youngest…

and my burlap Valentine’s Day sign.

Hoping you have a fabulous week….

Adding a little Ruffle

Back in October I started working on updating our family room curtains.  I started by adding a 15” burlap stripe to the base of our espresso brown curtains.  You can read all about it here.

I liked it, but didn’t love it.  It looked too harsh and simple and needed a little softness… like a little ruffle.

I used some white double ruffled ribbon and just hot glued it where the two fabrics met.

A quick update… less than 5 minutes per curtain.

Now they pop and I love the softness the ruffled ribbon brings to the burlap.

Thanks for stopping by & have a wonderful weekend!

Burlap Hearts

Happy Monday!

This weekend while the games were on I decided to play around with some red burlap.  Of course with red burlap and Valentine’s Day just a few weeks away my girls and I created some adorable burlap hearts for our Winter/Valentine’s day mantel ( reveal later this week).

Aren’t they sweet.

We created a heart template with some cardstock and traced the shape onto the red burlap.

I thought some jute twine would fix perfectly with the rustic burlap.

With a wide-eyed needle we stitched about the heart.

You know what I stuffed it with… cotton balls!  I didn’t have any pillow stuffing… but cotton balls worked great & I had a bunch in the linen closet!

Tomorrow night at the Power of Paint Party I’ll be sharing another part of this mantel.

Thanks for stopping by!

108th Power of Paint Party: Anatomy of my Chairs

Welcome Paint Lovers!!!

My goal for last week was to get our kitchen table and chairs functional before the kiddos went back to school.  Weeks ago I started by removing the white paint from my table top and staining it a deep espresso brown and then moved onto painting our chairs.

You can read about the homemade chalk paint recipe I used on the chairs here.

To finish them off I used some wax, but I couldn’t decide if I wanted to give them a light sanding.  I’m sure I’ll distress them and beat my kiddos to it.

I recovered the chair seats with a canvas drop cloth (cheap, durable and neutral).

I’m working on a little window makeover in the space & then I’ll show it to you all together.

When I originally scored them FREE on Craigslist years ago they were a light honey-stained wood…

then they went through a black phase…

and now they’re feeling a little blue…

Who knows how they’ll feel in another 2 years.

So what have you been painting???  Anything in these shades?

Valentine’s Day Burlap

Happy Monday!  Are you ready for this new week.  My kiddos are back to school today after 3 weeks off and I’ve got a list of projects that are calling my name that I can’t wait to get to.

With all the Christmas goodies packed away my mind has turned to winter and Valentine décor.   I hadn’t created a new burlap sign in a while so I thought I’d create a V-Day burlap sign.

Have you used Wordle before?  It is an oh-so-cool website where you can create subway style word art.  You plug in the words you want and then you can change the colors, font and the layout.  You can read more about it in the post I wrote here.

I’m selling Valentine’s Day burlap signs for $5 off now through February 5th.  If you are interested in ordering one you can email me at domesticallyspeaking (at) yahoo (dot) com.

If you haven’t already, you can check out the rest of the burlap signs here.

I hope you have a fabulous week & thanks for stopping by!

Burlap Striping

Happy Monday!

I’m still working on making over the family room.  One of my weekend projects was to update the espresso brown Ikea panels that were hanging in the room.

I figured adding a little burlap would add some texture to the panels along with a graphic effect.

I add a 15” burlap stripe.

And because I like to be unconventional I sewed the top part of the burlap fabric and hot glued the bottom part ((smile)).  I had put the sewing machine away and didn’t feel like hauling it back out, guess I was having a lazy moment.  But I knew the hot glue will hold.  I have window mistreatments (THANK you Nester) hanging in my living room for almost 4 years now and they are still holding beautifully.

So this is my big dilemma with them …

should I leave them as they are, in their rustic looking form

or should I finish off the burlap edge at the top and bottom of the burlap stripe where the two fabrics meet?  I was thinking maybe with just a simple white ribbon?

What do you think??

Thanks for stopping by & I hope you have a fabulous week!
