114th Power of Paint Party… Apple Green

Welcome Paint Lovers…

I’m desperately trying to finish up the final projects to complete the family room. So last week when we were having some lovely warm weather I broke out the spray paint.

I bought this chair at a garage sale for $1 about 4 years ago when we moved out here. It has lived in almost every room of our home at some time.

A couple weekends ago we made some major changes to our Ikea Bookshelves Entertainment Center (that I hope to share next week), so I figured this chair deserved a paint job and pop of color in our family room would be great.

Apple Green is such a happy color!

For the Love of… Hammered Metal

Gotta little bling with only 1 buck!

Happy Monday Guys! I hope you had a fabulous weekend!

A few weeks ago I shared with you guys my love for nailhead trim. You can see the post of some of the pics I’ve pinned over at Pinterest here.

Well I figured the nightstands in our master bedroom were a great piece for me to try out my nailhead upgrade on.

I original was going to use decorative tacks, but on my last trim to Dollar Tree I came across a 300 pack of thumbtacks for $1 and I figured… why not!

I used the same stencil I had used to paint our master bedroom wall and just traced the design onto the front of the drawers with a pencil.

Then with the smallest drill bit I had I drilled a little hole, maybe a 1/4 of an inch?

Most of my holes I could just press in the push pins. Some needed a little tap from the mallet. A few I drilled too far and I used super glue to hold the tack in because it was loose.

Each drawer took me less than 5 minutes!

Gotta little bling with only 1 buck!

Kitchen Nook

Happy Friday Folks! I’m so happy that we’re at the edge of the weekend. It’s been one of those weeks… anyone else have one of those too? I’m just thankful we have a weekend with no sporting events, birthday parties, etc.

I realized I never showed you guys my new-to-me (once again) kitchen table and chairs all together. So I wanted to share them with you guys today…

Next goal… finishing window treatments. I had some dark espresso brown panels hanging there, but I’ve got some leftover drop cloth from covering the chairs that I want to use. Not sure what I’m going to do with them yet though. Smile

108th Power of Paint Party: Anatomy of my Chairs

Welcome Paint Lovers!!!

My goal for last week was to get our kitchen table and chairs functional before the kiddos went back to school. Weeks ago I started by removing the white paint from my table top and staining it a deep espresso brown and then moved onto painting our chairs.

You can read about the homemade chalk paint recipe I used on the chairs here.

To finish them off I used some wax, but I couldn’t decide if I wanted to give them a light sanding. I’m sure I’ll distress them and beat my kiddos to it.

I recovered the chair seats with a canvas drop cloth (cheap, durable and neutral).

I’m working on a little window makeover in the space & then I’ll show it to you all together.

When I originally scored them FREE on Craigslist years ago they were a light honey-stained wood…

then they went through a black phase…

and now they’re feeling a little blue…

Who knows how they’ll feel in another 2 years.

Dark & Dreamy!

It is finished! At least the tabletop. You can read about part 1 here if you missed it. This tabletop use to be a creamy white, but after seeing countless tables with a creamy white base and a dark and dreamy tabletop… I finally did something about it!!

Here’s what I used:

General Finishes Gel Stain in Java

Minwax Paste Finishing Wax

Klean-Strip Paint Thinner

Foam brushes

old sock or cloth

sandpaper

103rd Power of Paint Party… Making Chalk Paint

Hope you’re having a fabulous start to your week.

This last week I decided to try out some homemade chalk paint. If you’re a paint-lover and a blog watcher I’m sure you’ve heard of Annie Sloan’s chalk paint. I’ve been waiting to try her paint, but there’s no $$$ in the budget for the pricey paint. If you haven’t heard about chalk paint… it’s a thicker paint, with great coverage… no need to sand or prime… sounds great, right! A few weeks ago one of the links here at the Power of Paint Party was for a recipe for chalk paint. I figured it was worth a try, especially since it was such a cheap option!

She gives a few recipe options, but I went with the plaster of paris add-in.

Here’s the recipe I used…

{Homemade Chalk Paint}

2 parts paint

1 part plaster of paris

I used a bunch of sample paints that I had from when we were picking out our master bedroom color.

I call my custom blue… Classico Blue. I dumped all the paint and the plaster of paris in a cleaned out Classico marina jar. After shaking it well, I was ready to go. If you let the paint sit for a few days you may need to add a few drops of water and shake well if it’s too thick.

I brushed it on with a foam brush. The paint is definitely thicker than normal paint, but still very easy to use.

Here’s some close up views…

It definitely looks thicker and has more texture than the paint on it’s own.

And feels rougher too. I haven’t done anything else to it yet… no distressing or waxing.

I’ve been working on my kitchen nook and this last weekend I primed my kitchen chairs.

About 4 years ago I painted them black but now I’m planning on a lighter, fresher color.

A few weeks ago the good folks at Kilz sent me a can of their Clean Start primer.

What a great primer it is!!!

Let me tell you why I loved it…

#1… Zero VOCs… healthier for me & the fam

#2… Extremely Low Odor… I painted indoors last weekend (as it was raining outside) and I barely smelled the paint and that was only when I got up close to it.

#3… Fast Drying… you can recoat with your new shade in 1 hour! Perfect for someone like me who really doesn’t like waiting.

Here are my black kitchen chairs (which I scored years ago FREE on Craigslist!!!)…

and here are some all primed and ready for their latest and greatest color and some new fabric on the seat cushions….

The Kilz Clean Start primer has a great consistency. I’d say more on the thicker side, but still perfectly easy to manage… but that thickness gives it GREAT coverage.

Oh… and a GREAT tip when painting chairs…

Hammer a nail into the base of all 4 chair legs so the chair is standing on the nails, that way you can easily get the paint all the way to the base without the sticking issues. (Thank you Pinterest!)
