A Nook Over Time

Thanks for Sharing!

Happy Monday!  Hope you had a great weekend.  I’ve got a fun look at the transformation of our nook over the years.  Do you have one of those nook spaces in your home too?

Here’s what our nook looks like currently:

3 Ikea Bookshelves turned Built-in

But let’s start back at the beginning.  When we first moved into our home everything was basic builder grade.  The home was a few years old and had been lived in, but only for a few months.  Every wall was still white.  Basic carpet, basic white tile countertops… everything basic builder grade.

Here’s a photo of the family room when we first got keys.  See that nook past the fireplace?  It’s big!  Back then we had one of those big, rolling big screen TV’s and it still didn’t fill the space.

See!  So we decided to create a built-in around the TV and discovered the easiest way to do that was using 3 IKEA Billy bookshelves.  (sorry for the pixelated photos.  This is back in 2009).  We used two bookshelves vertically on either side and one bookshelf across the top horizontally.   To get all the details on how we make our custom built-in with 3 Ikea bookshelves click here.

Well a few years ago this big TV died and we got a flat screen TV.  Problem now was what to do with the space the TV was in.  We decided to put the TV on a buffet on the wall to the right and make the space into a desk/work space area.

Adding burlap to the back of bookshelf

We lowered the shelf that had been right above the GIANT TV and reattached it at the perfect desk height. The desk is mounted on the two side vertical bookshelves and also on the wall behind.

Shortly after I decided to pretty up the back of the bookshelves too by adding burlap to the back.  This was SO easy & much quicker than painting the bookshelf backing.

I LOVE the texture and warmth that the burlap adds to the space.

So what do you think?

  1. Maryann, I love what you’ve done with your nook! I’m going to have to check out your post on the bookcases. Anyhoo, I wanted to let you know I worked up a thank you post for the giveaway you helped sponsor in May for Mother’s Day. Here is the link if you want to check it out. https://thededicatedhouse.blogspot.com/2013/07/a-recent-giveaway-i-won.html Again, thank you for your generosity! Toodles, Kathryn @TheDedicatedHouse

  2. Hi Maryann – isn’t it fun to see the transformations over time! We have a “library” which is basically a nook not that much bigger than yours and it is in dire need of love. Not sure what we are going to do with it yet because the bigger projects in the house are taking priority. I’ll let you know in a year from now! 🙂 Hugs, Holly @ coconutheadsurvivalguide

    1. I hear you girl! There’s always a LONG list of to-do’s. Can’t wait to see what you do with it, even if it’s a year from now.
