How did you first get into blogging?
We purchased our current home 6 years ago. Less than 6 months later my husband was laid off from his job, just like so many others during that time. We had a beautiful home with twice the square footage of our previous home and I desperately wanted to transform it into the home of our dreams… so I started repurposing what we had, finding freebies on Craigslist and doing what I could to make our Dream Home with little to no budget. During that time family and friends encouraged me to start a blog to share my tutorials and to encourage others to make the most of their homes. So Domestically Speaking was born 4 years ago.
How did you decide on the name of your blog?
I think that was one of the hardest parts of starting a blog, at least for me. How do you pick a name that encompasses who you are and what you want to share? After weeks of pondering I settled on Domestically Speaking… it covers what my blog is all about, anything domestic. You’ll find home décor, DIY projects, paint, recipes, crafts and more here at Domestically Speaking.
Is blogging something you do on the side, or is it a full-time job for you?
I’d currently call it a great part-time job. I homeschool our oldest two kiddos and volunteer at our youngest daughter’s school… plus our kiddos are sport’s loving which equals busy. I love that I can blog when it works best for our family. It is definitely a win-win… I’m doing something I love, with a schedule that fits around my family. My goal is to bring my blog to a full-time level though.
How has keeping a blog changed you?
I think if you have a blog where you want to share what you love it really makes you look at who you are, what your style is and what you want to spend your time on. I think over the past 4 years I’ve really learned more about me. Of course our styles change over time, but who I am at the core ~ the home I want to live in ~ what makes me feel the most “me”. That is definitely something that blogging has brought out in me.
What is your most popular project on Hometalk to-date?
What inspires you at Hometalk?
What doesn’t inspire me there! Goodness… if you haven’t been to Hometalk than you must check it out. So much home and garden inspiration. You can find awesome tutorials, great solutions for homekeeping issues and so many unique ideas. It one of my favorite sites to get lost on.
Do you stick to a strict posting schedule? How do you keep track of when and how often to post?
My goal is to have four blog posts each week. If you’re a paint lover then you definitely need to swing by on Tuesday nights when I host the Power of Paint Party.
This week we’re celebrating my 200th Power of Paint Party. I try to plan out a few weeks in advance and lately I’ve been using Google Calendar to try to keep it all organized. Some weeks I’m great at being organized and other weeks I’m a frantic mess. Although I’m beginning to think that’s just part of how a creative mind works.
What are your favorite kinds of posts to read/write?
I love reading posts from bloggers who do a fabulous job of weaving their personal life into what they are sharing in their creative world. I think it’s because that’s such a stretch for my personality. So it shouldn’t be any surprise that my favorite post to write is a tutorial. I love the step-by-step process and I find it very easy to be straight forward plus I love sharing with my readers how I do something. Here’s a few of my most popular tutorials…
Well… I hope you guys have enjoyed learning a little bit more about me and my blog. Thank you so much Miriam for inviting me to be in the Bloglight! I hope you guys have felt at home here on my site.
