Chippy Lantern Makeover with Glue
I’m so excited to get the Thrift Store Decor team together again for this new year. At the end of last year my husband found the cutest copper lantern at a thrift store. So I was ready to give this thrift store find a Chippy Lantern Makeover with Glue.
Chippy Lantern Makeover with Glue
Here’s what I started with:
Cute… but needed some cleaning. Here’s what I used on this project {affiliate links included for your convenience}
Chippy Lantern Supplies:
First step was cleaning the candle wax off the glass. Thankfully I had a heat gun. This made it a quick process to loosen the dried wax from the inside of the lantern. I heated it up and then wiped it out with a paper towel. I finished off with a good washing with some hot, soapy water.
Now to get a chippy finish you need to take basic white glue (like Elmers) and with a paint brush you want to make smooth strokes. Try to not overlap and don’t go back over an area once you’ve applied it.
Then you wait…. 5 minutes.
Then you apply your paint. I went with a white acrylic paint. You need to take the same approach… don’t overlap… don’t go over the area a 2nd time.
Within minutes the surface area will begin the chippy / crackling effect. It’s actually really cool to watch.
Finishing the sides was a bit more challenging, but still this lantern makeover was a really simple project.
I think this chippy lantern makeover with glue makes a lovely addition to our family room.

Of course I had to come see what the heck a glue finish was!
Very cool! Does this technique only work on metal?
I have a heat gun and never thought of using it to melt candle wax, duh. I love the lantern much better in the white.
This turned out adorable Maryann!
Cool idea with the glue! You now have my wheels turning. I’m going to be on the lookout for a collection of lanterns.
