Easy DIY Hanging Bed
Guys I’m LOVING this fun outdoor DIY project! It was an easy DIY (which makes everything better) and it’s ready just in time for summer! Let me show you our Outdoor Easy DIY Hanging Bed.
Easy DIY Hanging Bed
We purchased a bunk bed for our 2 oldest kiddos over 10 years ago. It’s gone through different kids throughout the years. Most recently it was in our youngest daughter’s bedroom but at 10 she was ready to get rid of one bed and just wanted a single in her room. So why not turn that extra twin bed into a hanging bed?
I decided to leave the legs on in case we want to use it as a bed again. It’s hanging from one of our pergolas about 6 inches off the ground.
Here’s how we did it!
Supplies used to turn a Twin Bed into a Hanging Bed: {affiliate links included for your convenience}
- Four 3/8″ Lag Thread Screw Hook
- Four Hook/Hook Turnbuckles
- Four Eye Bolt Screw Thread
- Four 8′ pieces of thick chain
- drill
- drill bits
Start by drilling a pilot hole in the tops of your twin bedframe. Make sure the drill bit is smaller than your hooks – so it can grip and hold strong.
Twist in the lag thread screw hooks until the threading is all inside the wood.
We drilled pilot holes onto the tops of our pergola posts. Then we twisted in the eye bolt screws into those holes. Then attach the hook/hook turnbuckles to the eye bolt screws in the tops of the pergola.
Then take the 8′ chains and connect everything.
I got some fun summer pillows with navy and aqua blues (I’m loving that combo).
Such a fun spot to enjoy! My youngest laid out on the bed last night as she did her reading homework. I can see many hours in the next months spent here.

The best place to see stars at night. And it’s very romantic too. Really appreciate your creative idea. If you have ideas about creating garden decoration stuff please make an article for it.
Never in a million years would I have thought to do this, but it’s an ingenious idea! If I had a front porch big enough to do this, I’m be hounding my husband to make me one of these.
Thank you for sharing this with us on the #HomeMattersParty. We hope to see you again when we open our doors at 12 AM EST on Friday.
What a fun project. I actually have a twin bed frame in my garage and this has given me some ideas on putting it to use. Thanks for sharing this on Merry Monday.
This is absolutely awesome!
Oh Maryann, do I love this patio DIY. That would be dangerous on my patio because I don’t think my head would leave the pillows all summer, except for bathroom breaks and drink refills!
Perfect spot for reading and so easy! Love it, pinned it!
Oh my goodness, this looks like so much fun! Love the navy and aqua you used to decorate it, too!
This makes a great porch statement! I love the idea and now I wish I had a porch! It looks great and such a simple way to add a swing!
I love this bed! What a comfortable place to relax – it looks so inviting!
wow! what a fun project Maryann! I didn’t expect it to really be “easy”. Super fun project for the kiddos to enjoy all summer long!

I think I’d be on that swinging bed a lot and I can picture how relaxing star gazing would be! Cool project!
What a great use for a twin bed. I’d probably spend half of my summer on it enjoying a good book!
What a fun idea! It is so cute too. I bet it’ll be well used.
Thanks Amy!
This is so fun!! My kids would love to have one of these, I love the pillows too! Awesome project!
Thanks Mindi… Yes – I scored those pillows at Marshalls – I’ve been tempted to put them on our sectional in the family room.
Seriously how fun is that?? I want to lay out there and read too! XO
Right – perfect place to escape Christy!
This is so cool! It is like the best.hammock.ever! Gorgeous!
Thanks Kim!
I absolutely adore this! If I had a place to put one, that’s where I’d always be!
Thanks Jeanie – I’m really looking forward to using it 🙂
