Character Door Hanger

Fall is my FAVORITE time of year and I just love how this cute scarecrow turned out.  This character door hanger could be painted with any seasonal face though.  This Thursday, October 20th, 2016,  at your local Home Depot you can signup to attend the DIH (Do It Herself) Workshop.  It’s free and it’s a great hands on demonstration where you can learn how to make your own Character Door Hanger.

Let me share how I made mine…

MATERIALS NEEDED: {affiliate links included for your convenience}

  • 1 – 1˝ x 6˝ x 8´ Tongue and Groove Pattern Stock Board
  • 1 – 1˝ x 4˝ x 8´ Common or Pine Board
  • 1 1/4″ brad nails for nailer
  • wood glue
  • craft acrylic paint
  • stain wipe-on cloths
  • paint brushes

ADDITIONAL TOOLS:

First step is cutting down your boards.

  • Measure and mark three (3) 32˝ sections from the 1˝ x 6˝ x 8´ Tongue and Groove Pattern Stock Board
  • and two (2) 24˝ sections from the 1˝ x 4˝ x 8´ common board
  • cut them with your miter or jigsaw

Squeeze some wood glue into the grooves of the tongue and groove boards and attach them together.

Time to attach the brim.  Measure 8″ down from the top right side and 12″ down from the top left side.

Place one of your cut common boards on those lines, making sure the overhang is equal on both sides.  The use the nailer to attach the common board to the tongue and groove placing 2 nails per board.

Flip it over and match up the other common board on top of the one you’ve just attach underneath.  Attach the common board with the nailer using 2 nails per board again.

Then it’s time to start the fun… paint and stain!!!  For the scarecrow side I used a creamy vanilla shade of acrylic paint and some butterscotch acrylic paint mixed together for the face area.  The hat I used a stain wipe-on cloth.  If you haven’t tried cloths – they are so quick and easy with no cleanup!
