From Gray to Zinc ~ A Desk Update
Hi Friends ~ Today I’ve got a desk update to share with you guys. Last summer I spray painted my desk ~ that use to be a coffee table ~ a lovely medium gray. But it just never worked for me. Every time I used it I just didn’t love it…. so I finally did something about it. I gave it a zinc makeover.
Have you noticed how hot zinc is lately?
Here’s what the desk looked like prior to the treatment.
I squirted some metallic acrylic paint, pearlizing medium and and clear medium into a plastic cup and mixed it up.. I’d say approximately 5 parts metallic, 1 part pearlizing and 1 part clear medium.
I brushed it on with a foam brush ~ which worked great to get into all the nooks and crannies.
I love how it turned out. The layers of colors and the shimmer gives the desk a depth and and richness that I was looking for.
Best part was it took last than 10 minutes to paint ~ LOVE a quick update!
Thanks for stopping by friends!
Maryann, great outcome! By chance did you use a polycrylic or other typo of sealer afterwards?
Hey Maryann! I love what you did and how it turned out! I’m trying to do the same but I’m not getting enough contrast in the paint! Did you use a silver metallic or a black metallic?
I used a silver metallic paint Emma.
I think I’ve finally found the inspiration for a redo desk I’ve been slowly working on for awhile now. I wondered what you thought about adding a clear glaze to the mix instead of the other Clear Medium? Would it be too thin perhaps?
Love seeing your projects! Thanks!
Absolutely stunning results! I really like the ratio of products you used and the richness of the finish. The fact it took just 1 hour makes this project irresistible. 🙂
Absolutely stunning! I like the ratio of products you used. Thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
Oh my gosh it’s beautiful Maryann! Gorgeous!
OK… now you have me thinking!
I love how your desk turned out, I have a few pieces that I am itching to try this on!
Thank you for the tip! 😉 Pinning.
Wow! Your technique really does make your table look like zinc.
The grey was pretty, but now it’s GORGEOUS!! I’m totally going to try some mixing up! I have used my acrylic tole paints to tint my glazes but this is just another great level! Thanks for sharing!!
WOW! I love what a difference that made! Can you share exactly which paints and mediums you used? this is awesome.
Sure Andi ~ I used FolkArt’s (Plaid) Metallic Acrylic Paint, Americana’s Pearlizing Medium & Americana Gloss Enamels Clear Medium.
Luv the depth in the piece! Beautiful!
Super cute! So great in fact, that I kept looking for a big picture. lol! Richness, the perfect description.
Shannon ~ this desk is in a cave ~ one small window… I tried for a full shot, but they just didn’t come out. I need to work on my photography skills. 🙂
This turned out great! I too have been using metallic paint speciality finishes and love the out come! You said you added a medium to the paint. I haven’t done this is there a reason for the medium? I use the Martha Stewart brand from Home Depot…
Tammy ~ I mainly used it to help slow dry time to help with the blending.
looks great, maryann! takes it to a whole new level!
Thanks Cassie ~ I’m lovin’ it! 🙂
