Cherry Heart Puff Pastry

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate than with a homemade treat that’s as charming as it is delicious?

Ingredients:

  • puff pastry dough
  • cherry pie filling
  • egg
  • easy icing and/or powdered sugar

Instructions:

Preheat and Prepare:

Preheat your oven to directed on your puff pastry packaging. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup.

Prepare the Puff Pastry:

Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter (about 3-4 inches wide), cut out as many hearts as possible from the pastry sheet. I was able to get 8 hearts with my cookie cutter. Place the hearts on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each.

Create Your Inner Heart:

Use a smaller heart cookie cutter and gently press it into the center of the hearts on the baking sheet. You don’t want to press through the dough, you are just looking to create the lines of the heart into the dough as a guide for your pie filling.

Add the Cherry Filling:

Spoon a few teaspoons of cherry pie filling onto the center of each heart-shaped pastry on the baking sheet. I used about 3 teaspoons per heart. You are trying to keep the filling inside the inner heart shape.

Egg Wash and Bake:

Lightly brush each pastry with beaten egg to give them a golden shine when baked.

Bake to Perfection:

Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake until the pastries are puffed and golden brown.

Serve and Enjoy:

Once baked, remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool. Dust with powdered sugar or create a simple icing with powdered sugar and milk to drizzle on top.

Tips

  • Sometimes the cookie cutters don’t do a great job going through the puff pastry. If that’s the case, use a sharp knife to make sure that the dough has been cut through before moving them to the cookie sheet.
  • If you make icing for your pastry hearts, using a fork to drizzle is the easiest option.
  • Feel free to experiment with different fruit fillings like raspberry or blueberry for a unique twist.
