Making Red And White Striped Peppermint Bath Salt

Prep the Bath Salt

Combine Epsom salt and baking soda. Stir it around until evenly combined. If you want you could add sea salt to the mixture at this point.

Scent it Right

Then add the drops peppermint oil, stir until just combined. The invigorating scent of peppermint not only screams Christmas but also brings a refreshing and energizing aroma to your bath.

Colorful Layers

Then take 1/2 the mixture and place in a separate bowl and add a drop of the red food coloring…mix and add more if needed to get the color you want. Now, you have a vibrant red bowl and a snowy white bowl of salt.

Layering Magic

Using a funnel makes filling the plastic ornaments super easy. I added 2-3 tablespoons of the red Epsom salt mixture into the ornaments, and then 2-3 tablespoons of the white… going back and forth until the ornament was filled. This is where the fun and creativity come into play!

Placing the clear plastic ornament in an ice cream dish/bowl keeps your hands free and makes it much easier to make these homemade peppermint bath salts.

Decorate and Gift

I added a sprig of greenery to the tops of the ornaments and tied it all up with a red and white baker’s twine bow. Adding some cute printable gift tags with directions on how to use them makes the perfect homemade gifts. Each ornament has enough bath salts for 2 baths.

Some beautiful ribbon would be a great alternative to the baker’s twine.

Directions: Fill your tub with hot water and add 1/2 the ornament into the hot water and let it dissolve.

  1. I made these over the weekend with a group of girlfriends. Our mixture what didn’t have any food coloring added turned blue! Have anyone had this happen to them??

  4. Love this idea ! It’s very cute and perfect for gift-giving. I am surprised to see a plastic ornament used however;
Essential oils should always be used in glass containers… Never plastic!!

    1. I was thinking the exact same thing wondering if the ornament were glass or not. The oil will melt that plastic the more it settles inside. Some of us learned the hard way long ago for sure so it’s only right that we let others know our trials and tribulations along the way!. 🙊💖

  5. Hi Maryann, this is such a clever idea! I love having simple and thoughtful gifts like this on hand for the holidays, and they would make perfect gift toppers.

I’d love if you shared this project at our link party, Create • Share • Inspire, tonight through Sunday. I hope to see you there!

  6. Love the idea! I just downloaded some peppermint gift tags for free. I actually forgot where I got them, but You could google free peppermint gift tags. I printed mine out in the smallest mode I could because my gift box was very small. It gets kind of expensive for the kids to give ALL their friends a gift. My idea was to make some peppermint earrings and bracelets with paper beads. I was also able to find a small peppermint gift box template to print out. So, parents, take heart, there is still a way to treat friends and have fun, too!
Thanks for sharing this! It will go so good with some of the peppermint themed things we have so far!
