How to Turn a Desk into a Nightstand
Have you ever thought about turning a Desk into a Nightstand? This month’s Power Tool Challenge was repurpose and I figured taking an old desk and repurposing it into something useful was a great idea. So let me share how to Turn a Desk into a Nightstand.
Desk into Nightstand
Here’s what I started with. This actually use to be my desk when I was a child.
The legs on the right side were wobbly and we had no need for a desk, so it was time to do some cutting.
Here’s what we used.

- circular saw, this is the one I love
- yard stick
- wood putty
- sander
- white chalky paint
- paint brush
- new knobs and handles, I used Oil Rubbed Bronze finish
We started by deciding where we would cut. I wanted to keep the the left and right side with about the same overhang. Once I decided where I wanted the cut, we used our circular saw to chop through the desk. We cut half-way through one side and then came around from the back and cut through that side until we met the cut in the middle.
The top of the desk had some dings and damage from years of use. I used wood putty to fill and repair those areas. Once the putty had dried well I gave the top and the cut side a good sanding.
Then it was time to paint. I used white chalky paint. I love chalky paint because it’s so thick you normally only need one coat.
Once the paint was dry it was time to add the hardware. I went with oil rubbed bronze. I always love the combo of crisp white and oil rubbed bronze.
Not bad for an old desk right?

Innovative idea. Great implementation as well. I really enjoy to read this kind of article. Well done. Keep sharing such new thoughts. Thanks.
Wish I had some power tools and I would try some things to repurpose! Good luck to everyone!
Love it! It was mean’t to be a night stand!
What a great idea! The table you created from the desk is going to be perfect to use as a nightstand. I like it painted white with the oil rubbed bronze hardware.
So smart! I’ve thrown away desks and furniture that was in bad shape before. Love how you saved this piece! Pinned:)
Awesome job Maryann! The nightstand turned out so cute.
Pinning!

Maryann, It turned out great! I love the classic look of white with the oil rubbed bronze hardware! Great save and it looks way better as a nightstand then a desk.
What a clever project! The desk drawers are awesome bedside storage – so great!
This post really got my wheels turning – I have an old desk that must stay a desk, but it’s right next to a bed so I want to use it as a nightstand and desk combo…it just needs chalk paint and I will paint the handles ORB. Night remove the section for bulky drawers and do baskets for storage. Thanks for the inspiration!
This desk hack is genius! Love how you took it to the next level and turned it into something else that works for what you need. Awesome project! Pinned
