TV Tray Makeover
I’ve got an awesome TV Tray Makeover to share with you today. I always love to see what some stain and paint can do to transform an item. It’s thrift store makeover time again. I love this time of the month to see what my blogging friends transform.
So this month I turned a basic TV tray into this!
Amazing stuff right?
So I found this basic TV tray at a thrift store. I’m sure you’ve all seen one and might even have one. The store was 30% off that day so I scored it for $2.35.
Very functional… but nothing too exciting to look at.

So I started by giving it a good cleaning.
Then I gave the white portion a light sanding… I wanted to scuff it up because it was getting a staining!
I used one of my favorite shades of stain lately…. Kona. It’s a beautiful, rich brown. I used a foam brush and gave it a nice coat, let it sit about 5-10 minutes and then wiped off the excess.
I let it dry thoroughly overnight and then came the fun part… Painting! I used an acrylic paint writer in white to create some fun, whimsical flowers.
I started by sketching out some ideas on paper, then went to work.
The paint tip with the paint writer was very easy to use and it took less than 30 minutes to knock-out the design on the tray.
The results…
LOVE!!! I’ve been wanting something to put my laptop on while working in bed and this is perfect… although I told my kiddos it was so they could bring me breakfast in bed daily!
A few more pics of this TV tray makeover that I’m loving…
Now check out what the rest of the team made over this month.

I am so impressed! This really turned out beautifully!
I seriously thought you had used a stencil on that! You are so talented! Love how it came out.
I like what you did with the tray. When I read “TV tray,” I thought you were talking about the ones that were popular years ago. They clip onto metal legs, and families used them to eat off of when watching TV. The trays are bigger than the bed trays. Nice design!
REALLY NICE JOB! I AM GOING TO GO FIND MINE AND USE IT FOR MY LAPTOP – AND BTW – THEY WERE ORIGINALLY BED TRAYS, NOT TV TRAYS, SO GET THOSE KIDS MOVING ON THE BACON & EGGS!
You have awesome ideas with items
As well as great inspirational designs
WOW! Ok, I seriously thought you covered the white portion with a piece of plywood!! Love this so much.
Awesome makeover!!! The design ? I’m so jealous. I could never do that!
pinned!

Fantastic makeover! I wish I never threw my old one away lol
Wow! What a fantastic makeover!
I have one of these trays but never thought of redoing it, nice job!!
So the white surface was just painted wood? I have one of these and I always thought it was something like whiteboard. How much sanding did it take (if you can remember now!).
Hi Amy! I sanded the white surface, just enough to scuff it up… so that it could absorb the stain.
OMG, how beauty this tray turned out. I love this.
Thank you Ivory!
Lovely!! What a fab idea.
The flowers are a beautiful touch too
Well done you 🙂

Absolutely lovely, Maryann! It looks so rich and those flowers are the perfect touch.
This is so pretty, I have one of those just waiting for a makeover!
Thanks Kristin! I think everyone who got married in the 90’s has one… right?
Could you add a pattern for the flowers? I just really love the design and haven’t the talent to draw free hand. =)
Let me ponder the best way to do that… I can free hand it, but I’m sure I couldn’t do it with a graphics program.
It’s gorgeous! I love it. I hope you kids bring you breakfast in bed using the new tray!
Thanks Malia – I hope so too 😉
Love your makeover Maryann!! The floral design is so gorgeous! So fun to party with you today!!! Heather
