Valentine Pillow ~ Burlap and Ribbon Heart
I’ve got a confession…. I’m not a huge Valentine’s decorator. I’d rather bake the Valentine goodies and do a craft with my kiddos, but I will throw a few Valentine decor items into the mix. This year I made a sweet, simple Valentine pillow from one of my favorite fabrics ~ burlap, and sweetened it up with a red ribbon with a dotted line. If you love adding decorative pillows, then this is a great craft for you.
What’s Needed to Make a Valentines Day Pillow

- Burlap Fabric
- Pillow Insert
- Red Saddle Stitch Ribbon
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Large Needle (for the ribbon)
Step 1 – Determine Size Of Pillow Cover
My pillow is 12″x12″. Picking the size pillow you want is the first set, so you know what size insert you need and also how much burlap fabric you will need to cover it. For a 12″x12″ pillow, I would want at least 14″x26″ of fabric. Basically, you want to add 2 inches on the height and double the width plus two inches.
Step 2 – Cut Decorative Burlap To Size
The next step is cutting your burlap fabric down to the correct size. You can either cut two squares and pin them together or what I did here was cut a rectangle, but I folded it over into a square shape.
Step 3 – Sew Burlap Together Along 3 Sides
I stitched up this little DIY burlap pillow by hand. If you’ve been around my blog for long you know I’m not much of a seamstress and if this had been fabric other than burlap I would have hot glued it together. Our sewing machine is out of commission at the moment… so hand stitching it was. I pinned three sides to make the stitching easier then I hand-stitched.
Step 4 – Turn Cover Right Side Out
Once you have the three sides stitched, you want to flip the fabric so the seam is now on the inside. Now you’re ready for the pillow insert.
Step 5 – Drawing the Heart
I used a heart-shaped cake pan and chalk to stencil the outline of the heart shape on the burlap. Then, I inserted the pillow form, and then you can pin and finish stitching.
Step 6 – Add Ribbon
Then with a cute red saddle dash ribbon and a large needle, I created this sweet heart on the burlap pillow. I started at the bottom of the heart on the left side and then finished on the bottom right side.
I left enough ribbon at the ends to tie it off as a cute bow.
I love it! It’s a sweet Valentine’s décor addition… that’s just my style. The perfect throw pillow for the season. A couple of these valentine’s day pillows would make the perfect gift. Perfect for an entryway bench during the month of February.
Here are a few other Valentine goodies I’ve made over the years…

Hi Maryann,
I found your blog through the Pinterest for this cute Valentine pillow. What a sweet idea and my favorite part is how you tied the bow at the bottom of the heart. I used your idea and made one for our porch. Thank you for the Valentine inspiration and happy to have found your blog.
