Pergola Part II

One of our biggest DIY Summer prep projects has been finishing our pergola.  We’re almost there!
Pergola Part II
If you missed my Part I post you can read it HERE.
We’ve worked another 3 days on the pergola since the last post.
Day 3… we finished cementing the other 4 posts and put the support rafters on the first pergola.

Day 4… we put support rafters on pergola 2 and added additional rafters on both pergolas.

Day 5… SHADE ~ we decided to use drop cloth canvas to make a cover for the pergolas. We get HOT here in the summer… most of July & August we’re hovering around 100 degrees.  We were thrilled to discover that they made drop cloths large enough.  The one we used was 12×15 feet.  In the future we may take the cover off and add cross beams.

I am LOVIN’ this transform to our backyard + I’m lovin’ the shade on our patio and the shade to our home.
Each pergola is 12×12 feet, so we kept those extra 3 feet on the drop cloth so we could have a nice little overhang.  This side of the house faces the west… so another bonus to keep the heat out of the house.
We couldn’t have done this project without my dad & mom.  My dad designed the pergola and helped us build them & my mom was sewer extraordinaire on the drop cloths.  She sewed around the slits we made to slide the cloth over the posts and the pocket on the overhang where we inserted a 2×2 to help weigh it down.
So THANK YOU Mom & Dad!
Between the pergolas we hung a shade cloth that is  10×10 feet.
We still need to replace the pavers we pulled out, but this project is almost done…
and I’m positively GIDDY!!!

3rd Countdown to Summer ~ Shell Pots

You know I adore shells.  There is something so relaxing about collecting shells at the beach.

This last week we got to the beach once.  It was cloudy and cool, so the kiddos played in the sand more than the water… so I got more shells!

I took some terra-cotta pots that I had in the garage, my newly collected shells and my trusty glue gun.

I started with the large shells and then filled in the spaces with the smaller shells.

I love the look of a shell trim.

I’m working on summer’izing my mantle.

I put my larger pot out front on our paver patio.

Now I just need a cute plant for it.

So how are you getting ready for summer?

For the Love of… Pergolas

Don’t you just love a beautiful outdoor room?

There is just something that happens to a patio

when it’s covered with a pergola… instant room!

Wouldn’t this be a lovely place for dinner?

Garden Room

Love the trees entwined….

pergola with climbing perennial vines surround a brick patio with benches and fountain

A rustic space…

Outdoor Dining Pergola, We added a 12x18 pergola covered patio off of our indoor dining room so we can enjoy the garden while eating! The second pergola is down in the garden away from the house. I just posted pics of that one too!, Patios & Decks Design

Just gorgeous at night… love the drapes and chandelier

Peaceful and serene space with natural privacy, This space has been enhanced with the addition of Silver Lace Vine which was planted last spring and grows up to 30' per year. This picture was taken one year after planting, Private space - planted silver lace vine and clematis. , Patios & Decks Design

White column make this a classic beauty!

So here is where we are…ok, we’ve gotten a little further than this…

Last Saturday, Hubby and Dad dug eight 30” holes (not a fun job).

On Monday we start to put in the posts.  Making sure they were level and spaced properly took awhile.

We got 6 posts in and 4 filled with concrete.

Only the dark post are staying.  The others we used as supports to keep everything in place as the concrete dried.

The posts are 10 feet apart.  The pergola will be 12×12 feet in total size (the top beams with be 12 feet).  We will have a pergola on the left side and on the right side.  Between the 2 pergolas we are hanging a square sail shade.

We’re “hoping” to have it finished by Father’s Day!

Our New Front Yard Patio…

I thought I’d show you all some more of what we’ve been working on outside.  If you missed my backyard posts you can read about them HERE and HERE.

First I should show you guys what our front yard looked like when we first bought our home.

drake

A big dead mess!  Except for those darn weeks that can grow ANYWHERE!

drake front door

We’ve done a LOT of work over the last couple years… pulling weeds… planting plants and trees…

P4020011 P4020012

raking out all the dead sod… laying new sod… exhausting!

P5140003

We decided we wanted to have a patio area out front, since our front yard is decent size and our kiddos are always out front playing.  We figured it would be a nice adult area to sit and watch the munchkins play.

We originally were just going to lay down some pavers, but my mom came up with the idea of putting a small pillar area in front to frame the space.

So my ultra-talented brother with the help of my dad and hubby built this pillar-wrought-iron mini wall.

IMG_1854       IMG_1862

LOVE it!  It instantly added a focal point to our front yard… which in having to landscape from nothing, I’ve discovered how important that is.  You can have beautiful flowers, pavers, trees, etc… but having a focal point really does make everything look so much more amazing.

IMG_3009

The guys knocked this out in just over a day… A-MAZING!

IMG_2998

Next step was laying the pavers behind the pillars.  These are 12×12 inch pavers that Lowes, Home Depot and even Wal-Mart carry… we found them used on Craigslist.

IMG_2996

Don’t you love the little table and chairs… chairs were from craigslist (6 for $20) and the little table was free.

IMG_2999

We still have the area between the pavers and the planter box along the fence to finish… hopefully this weekend if it dries out.

IMG_2994

Can’t wait to enjoy endless hours sitting there with my laptop (once my sick baby gets fixed) and my water with lemon… ahh.

I’m sharing my front patio here…
