Making Peppermint Rice Krispie Treats
The base of this festive recipe, the rice krispie treats, is my go-to recipe any time I make them. (affiliate links provided for your convenience)
Ingredients:
- butter
- marshmallows
- rice krispie cereal
- crushed candy canes
Anyone else love homemade rice krispie treats? There is just something magical that happens when you melt butter, add marshmallows and some of the beloved crispy rice cereal. I love how easy the recipe is to remember.
Prepare the Base:
Melt butter in a large pan over medium-low heat. Once the butter is melted, add the marshmallows. Stir continually until marshmallows are melted. Once marshmallows are melted, remove from heat. Add the rice krispie cereal and stir until evenly combined.

Press into a Pan:
Transfer the mixture into a greased or lined baking pan. Use a spatula or your hands (lightly coated with butter to prevent sticking) to press the mixture evenly into the pan. Allow it to cool and set while we move on to the next delightful step.
Melted White Chocolate:
I love white chocolate melted onto treats! It’s so creamy and adds a great flavor. I personally like using vanilla, white chocolate melts. I find they melt and spread easier. If you prefer you can melt white chocolate chips.
I put my melts into a glass measuring cup and microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring after each time to see how melted it is. Once the white chocolate is melted pour on top of the cooled rice krispie treats and spread until the top is evenly coated. If you wanted even more peppermint flavor you could add a teaspoon of peppermint extract to your melted chocolate
Crushed Candy Canes
Peppermint Dust Sprinkles is my favorite for topping treats during the holidays. It’s a fine, crushed peppermint which helps to spread it more evenly. Add as much as you’d like as soon as you’ve spread out that melted white chocolate (it will start to set up quick). You could crush up your own candy canes or peppermint candies. I’d recommend placing in a ziploc bag and gently hitting the candies with a rolling pin.

Once the white chocolate has set up, you can cut into squares and serve. They make great Christmas gifts for your neighbors, Christmas party treats or hostess gift!

Equipment
- 9×13 pan
Ingredients
Rice Krispie Treats
- 6 tbsp butter

- 6 cups rice krispie cereal
White Chocolate Spread
- 1 1/2 cups vanilla white chocolate melts
Peppermint Topings
- 1-2 tsp peppermint dust sprinkles
Instructions
Rice Krispie Treats
- Melt butter in a large pot over medium-low heat. Once butter is melted add the marshmallows. Stir continually until the marshmallows are melted.
- Once marshmallows are melted, remove from heat. Add the rice krispie cereal and stir until evenly combined.
- Add the rice krispie treats to a prepared pan. I spray my pan with nonstick spray but your can coat with melted butter too. I find that coating my hands with the nonstick spray and then pressing the treats into the pan helps to prevent unwanted sticking.
- Let the treats set up to room temperature before moving on.
White Chocolate Spread
- I put my melts into a glass measuring cup and microwave at 30-second intervals, stirring after each time to see how melted it is.
- Once the white chocolate is melted drizzle on top of the cooled rice krispie treats and spread until the top is evenly coated.
Peppermint Topping
- Add as much Peppermint Dust Sprinkles as you’d like as soon as you’ve spread out that melted white chocolate (it will start to set up quick).
- Let the white chocolate set up until firm and then cut into squares.
