What Is Caramel Apple Bark?

Caramel apple bark is basically a deconstructed caramel apple turned into an easy candy bark.

Instead of coating an entire apple in caramel, you layer chocolate, caramel, and fresh apple pieces on a baking sheet.

Once everything is chilled and firm, you break it into pieces and enjoy.

Think of it as caramel apple candy without all the fuss of making caramel apples.

Ingredients You’ll Need

You only need a few ingredients for this easy chocolate caramel apple bark:

  • Milk chocolate melts – You can also use chocolate chips, semi-sweet chocolate, or dark chocolate.
  • Caramel dip – Using prepared caramel dip makes this recipe especially easy.
  • Granny Smith apple – The crisp, tart flavor works beautifully with the sweet chocolate and caramel.
  • Lemon juice – Tossing the apple pieces with lemon juice helps keep them from browning.

You can also add optional toppings such as crushed pretzels, chopped nuts, melted chocolate, or flaky sea salt.

How to Make Caramel Apple Bark

How to Melt the Chocolate for Apple Bark

In a microwave-safe bowl, melt your chocolate in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until they’re smooth and glossy. Alternatively, you can use a double boiler to melt the chocolate. This step is key, so don’t rush it! I used milk chocolate melts, but you could use semi-sweet chocolate chips, dark chocolate, whatever you prefer.

On a parchment paper-lined baking sheet, pour the melted chocolate and spread it evenly, forming the base layer. The parchment paper will make it easier to remove the bark later.

Then place it in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes so the chocolate sets up.

Preparing the Apples for Your Bark

Start by washing, coring, and slicing your apples into small, bite-sized chunks. You can peel them if you prefer, but I love the extra crunch and color the skin provides.

I used Granny Smith apples for my bark, but you can use whatever you prefer. I think a crisp apple works best though. I used only half a giant diced apple for this recipe.

Adding the Caramel Layer

For my caramel sauce layer I used a caramel dip. It is already done and a great consistency that is spreadable. So after the chocolate has set up in the fridge you just spread the caramel on top of the chocolate.

Topping with Apples and Extras

Now, it’s time for the star of the show—those juicy apple chunks. Arrange them on top of the caramel layer. You can go as light or as generous as you like with the apple pieces. If you’re feeling adventurous, this is where you can sprinkle some crushed nuts and a pinch of sea salt for that perfect balance of sweet and salty.

This Caramel Apple Chocolate Bark is not only a sweet masterpiece; it’s also a wonderful gift idea for the upcoming holidays. Wrap it up in colorful cellophane or present it in a festive tin for a homemade touch that everyone will appreciate.

The Best Apples for Caramel Apple Bark

I used a Granny Smith apple, and it’s my favorite choice for this recipe.

The tart, crisp apple provides a nice contrast to the sweet caramel and rich chocolate.

Other crisp apples can work too, including:

  • Honeycrisp
  • Pink Lady
  • Fuji
  • Gala

I’d choose a firm, crisp apple rather than a softer variety so you get that satisfying crunch.

Can I Use Different Chocolate?

Absolutely.

Milk chocolate is what I used, but you can substitute:

  • Semi-sweet chocolate
  • Dark chocolate
  • White chocolate

If you use white chocolate, the finished bark will be much sweeter, so a sprinkle of flaky sea salt can help balance the flavors.

Can I Make Caramel Apple Bark Ahead of Time?

Yes, but because this recipe contains fresh apple, I recommend making it relatively close to when you plan to serve it.

Keep the finished bark refrigerated in an airtight container.

For the best texture, especially for the fresh apple, enjoy it within a few days.

Can I Give Caramel Apple Bark as a Gift?

Absolutely!

This makes such a fun homemade fall or holiday gift.

Break the bark into smaller pieces and package them in:

  • Cellophane bags
  • Small treat boxes
  • Holiday tins
  • Clear jars

Tie the package with a pretty ribbon and you’ve got an easy edible gift.
