Gotta little bling with only 1 buck!

Happy Monday Guys!  I hope you had a fabulous weekend!

A few weeks ago I shared with you guys my love for nailhead trim.  You can see the post of some of the pics I’ve pinned over at Pinterest here.

Well I figured the nightstands in our master bedroom were a great piece for me to try out my nailhead upgrade on.

I original was going to use decorative tacks, but on my last trim to Dollar Tree I came across a 300 pack of thumbtacks for $1 and I figured… why not!

I used the same stencil I had used to paint our master bedroom wall and just traced the design onto the front of the drawers with a pencil.

Then with the smallest drill bit I had I drilled a little hole, maybe a 1/4 of an inch?

Most of my holes I could just press in the push pins.  Some needed a little tap from the mallet.  A few I drilled too far and I used super glue to hold the tack in because it was loose.

Each drawer took me less than 5 minutes!

Gotta little bling with only 1 buck!

Hope you have a fabulous week!

Kitchen Nook

Happy Friday Folks!  I’m so happy that we’re at the edge of the weekend.  It’s been one of those weeks… anyone else have one of those too?   I’m just thankful we have a weekend with no sporting events, birthday parties, etc.

I realized I never showed you guys my new-to-me (once again) kitchen table and chairs all together.  So I wanted to share them with you guys today…

If you missed the how-to’s here are the links…

chalk painted chairs (with recipe)

removing white paint top

dark dreamy stain

Next goal… finishing window treatments.  I had some dark espresso brown panels hanging there, but I’ve got some leftover drop cloth from covering the chairs that I want to use.  Not sure what I’m going to do with them yet though. Smile

Thanks for stopping by & have a fabulous weekend!

Burlap Hearts

Happy Monday!

This weekend while the games were on I decided to play around with some red burlap.  Of course with red burlap and Valentine’s Day just a few weeks away my girls and I created some adorable burlap hearts for our Winter/Valentine’s day mantel ( reveal later this week).

Aren’t they sweet.

We created a heart template with some cardstock and traced the shape onto the red burlap.

I thought some jute twine would fix perfectly with the rustic burlap.

With a wide-eyed needle we stitched about the heart.

You know what I stuffed it with… cotton balls!  I didn’t have any pillow stuffing… but cotton balls worked great & I had a bunch in the linen closet!

Tomorrow night at the Power of Paint Party I’ll be sharing another part of this mantel.

Thanks for stopping by!

Lovey Lanterns

Happy Friday!  I’ve got another V-Day project to share.  I’m in a lovey mood with a whole board dedicated to Valentine’s Day on Pinterest.  Last week I found this easy, cost me nothing project to try.

1st… Save some of your cans from the recycling bin and give them a good cleaning before filling them with water.  Take your water filled cans and place them in the freezer.

2nd… Once the water is frozen, use a pen to trace on your design, letters, etc. Once you’re done you can just wipe it off (since it’s wet).

3rd… Use a hammer and nail to poke holes in your design.

4th… Pop out your ice chuck.

You may notice that the base of some of your cans may bulge when they freeze (2 of my 4 did).  After I  had dumped out the ice chunk, I just flipped them over and gave them a little tap with the hammer (all better).

I made a “Love”.. “xoxo”… and hearts.

Aren’t they cute!  And I bet you have all the supplies you need in your home right now.

Are you decorating for Valentine’s Day too?

Thanks for stopping by & I hope you have a fabulous weekend!

Jumping Ship

A few weeks ago I made a move… no it wasn’t as stressful and overwhelming as moving to a new home, but it was one that made me nervous every time I pondered it.  I moved my blog from Blogger to WordPress.

blogger-wordpress-migration

This was not a move I made quickly.  I’ve been thinking, debating, asking questions and seeking wisdom from other bloggers who had made the move and researching every possible article/post on how to make the move on my own.

The main reasons I decided to move… issues with Blogger this last years (days down, disappearing posts and comment issues), knowing Blogger really owned my blog as it sat on their server and the overwhelming positives I heard from everyone who had made the move… no one regretted it.

Why I made the move on my own… no $$$ and even if I did, I’m cheap… if I can do it on my own I will or at least I’ll try.

Now, I’m no expert at this!  I’ve done this once and I think I’ve done it pretty well (from what I can tell logistically), but if you want to make this move on your own too… make sure you do your research too.  There were moments I was freaked out and wishing I had the money to just hand over to someone to figure it all out for me.

One piece of wisdom I’ll share. I wish I had done this earlier.  The fact that I had so much to lose (# of blog post, # of comments, followers, subscriber #’s, etc) made this even more nerve-racking.  If you LOVE blogging (like I do) and want to secure and control your blog then you might want to consider the move too.

First step… you need to have your own domain and you need a host.    I already had my own domain (domestically-speaking.com) but I purchased hosting and moved my domain over to my host.

I chose Bluehost.  I have to tell you I’ve been thrilled with Bluehost.  In the weeks of all the behind the scenes chaos, every time I chatted online with someone from Bluehost they were so helpful and quick!

I also chose to purchase the Genesis framework and the child theme Pixel Happy from Studiopress.  I’m still working on learning the new language of wordpress and how to customize it to how I want, but I’m thrilled with what I’ve learned so far.

OK… so the details.  Here are a list of the sites I found most valuable as I made the move.  Some have the same info, some give more details, but they were all a vital part of me being able to make the wordpress on my own.

Blogging with Amy ~  Great place to start to help you evaluate if you want to make this move on your own, plus I’ve found a bunch of other great wordpress tips & video tutorials on her site.

Beautifully Invisible – a great step-by-step… this one is a great hand-holding tutorial

Rosalilium ~ a great overview to show you what is involved

My Pregnancy Baby ~ great steps to not lose any friends/followers

Nanny Goats in Panties ~  used for maintain permalinks and redirecting traffic

I’m pretty quick at learning computer stuff, but a month plus later I’m still in learning mode.  If you feel pretty confident at computer stuff, I’d say you could make the move on your own.  The actual steps are not difficult, it’s the worry that you haven’t done something.  All of the sites above do a very thorough job at going over all the steps I used.

Overall blogger was great to me.  It was a great place for me to start, but as things grow, things need to change.

I hope this helps you if you are considering making the move.

Brown Paper Packages Tied Up with String

If you haven’t entered my PartyLite giveaway yet, click HERE.

Today is my Kiddos last day of school before Christmas break ~ wahoo!!!  I came across a cute gift bag idea this week that I knew would be perfect for their teachers and coaches.

You can find the directions and the printable here.

My printer needed a little feeding help ( a little pushing) to get it to feed the bag & I also changed my printers setting to cardstock to enable it to take the thick bag.

I filled the bags with a mini Pumpkin Spice Bread loaf and an assortment of chocolates.

This would make a great gift for co-workers, neighbors and even family.

Happy gift bag making!!!

Who Knew!

Last night at the Power of Paint Party I shared my family sign…

and promised all the details today.

First… I found a scrap of plywood from the garage and gave the side I was going to paint a rough sanding (just to smooth it out a bit).  You can see from the pic that it wasn’t very pretty, but all those flaws will make it look even better in the long run (ok I think we can make a deep life moment out of that statement).

Then I used the leftover paint from my recent family room paint makeover.  Just one really good coat.

Once the base coat was dry I used some espresso brown acrylic paint that I watered down I lightly painted random areas of the board.  This really is better not to think much about the placement.  If you’re like me and one of those over planners you might even want to close your eyes.  I did try to focus on the cracked, worn, character parts of the board.

I let the brown dry overnight before moving onto my creamy white.  I used a dry brush method with the white paint.  Dry brushing is when your brush has barely any paint on it.  I usually just dip the tip of my brush in and then wipe it off on the edge of the can as well.  This will give it the faded look with some areas with more coverage and some with less.  Here too you just want to randomly place your white.  Remember there is no right or wrong here… it’s art!  Put some music on and go with it ((smile))!

Now… once your top coat is all dry came the part I couldn’t wait to try!  I found this over at Pinterest a month or two ago and I’d been dying to try it.

Here’s the concept… you print out words on basic white paper, but in mirror image form… lay them on the wood… with a damp paint brush wet the paper on top of the words… use the cap of a sharpie to rub on top of the letters to help them transfer … then remove the paper and stand in shock and awe!

Here’s the detailed version…

Printing in mirror ~  If you have Photoshop Elements you type your word(s) and then go to Image… Rotate…Flip Layer Horizontal.  If you want to use a word processing program then here are a couple ways to try.  This one is creating WordArt and the other way is trying to use your printer.  If you go to File… Print… Properties and see if you can find a method to flip it.

Once you have your word(s) printed then arrange them with the printed side facing down.  Fill a bowl with water and dip in your paint brush.  I used a 2 inch wide paint brush. (I wouldn’t recommend a foam brush as they really absorb water)  You need to get the paper damp, but you do not want it soaking wet. (So wipe it on the edge of the bowl a few times)  I did one page at a time and moved quickly.

Once the paper is damp I used the tip of a Sharpie marker and rubbed over the letters to get the ink to transfer. I used a horizontal, back-and-forth method.  You don’t want to rub too hard because the paper could tear.  This is more an issue if your paper is too wet.  Then I removed the paper.  I found that if I let the paper sit to long the ink starts to bleed, especially if it is too wet.

Isn’t that the coolest trick!!!  Obviously you could paint on top of the letters to darken them, but I was going for the worn look so it worked perfectly!

What do you think?  Are you dying to try it too?
